Blanch Purple Hull Peas

Purple hull peas need to be blanched before they can be eaten.

Purple hull peas are typically used in Southern American cooking. They are closely related to another commonly used pea, the black eyed pea. Before purple hull peas can be enjoyed, they must be blanched. Blanching purple hull peas stops enzymes and bacteria from spoiling the peas and makes the peas soft and appetizing.

Instructions

1. Fill a large pot with 4 cups of water. Put the large pot on the stove top. Turn the stove burner on to high.

2. Add the purple hull peas when the water in the large pot is boiling.

3. Set your kitchen timer to two minutes. Fill your large bowl with ice water.

4. Use the slotted spoon to remove the purple hull peas from the boiling water when the timer goes off. Put the peas into the bowl with ice water.

5. Wait two minutes, and then take the purple hull peas out of the bowl with your slotted spoon. You can now use the purple hull peas in a variety of dishes. Be sure to turn off your stove burner when your peas are blanched.
