All people would like to feed their children organic foods, but many people don't go into the organic food stores because they think they can't afford the prices. If you have a tight food budget, even walking into a specialty food store can seem daunting. All fears aside, if you shop carefully and change your menu slightly, you can find affordable organic food.
Instructions
1. Make an assessment of your family's favorite foods and look for organic varieties. Getting familiar with the different brands of organic foods and their prices will help when you are faced with a store shelf full of new and unfamiliar products.
2. Be ready to substitute foods your family usually enjoys for something new. If toaster pastries make your family favorites list, try a graham cracker with a bit of peanut butter instead.
3. Think about the packaging of the foods you are buying and reduce, therefore saving resources and money. For instance, choose the plain organic oatmeal available in bulk over the box of single serving organic oatmeal packages. If you pour a bit of the oatmeal in a coffee mug with some honey and flax seed, you've got a custom made breakfast ready to take with you on your morning commute.
4. Shop everywhere. There are a multitude of online organic food stores, and if you live near a major city, there are many grocers and farmer's markets as well. Look for organic fruits and vegetables at farmers markets, u-pick farms and certain stores such as Whole Foods, Trader Joe's and even Sam's Club.
5. Tell your local grocer what you want. Now that you have a good idea of what is available and what your family likes, make an effort to see it on your corner grocery store shelves. Look up the number and ask for management or, if they have a website, shoot them an email. You may think that your effort won't amount to much, but if you and a dozen or so other people in the neighborhood ask for the same thing, you'll likely find it on the store shelves.
