Open A Pomegranate

The pomegranate has been regaining popularity in recent years as its reported health benefits are becoming more known. The mystery remains, though, as to open a pomegranate properly. Try the following steps and you'll be on your way to enjoying all the healthy deliciousness of the pomegranate.

Instructions

1. Place your pomegranate on a cutting board. Cut around the top or the crown of the pomegranate, similar to cutting a pumpkin for Halloween, and remove the lid.

2. Look inside and there will be five membranes that will be visible. Slice skin deep down each of these. The membranes will appear to be in the shape of a star.

3. Pry the pomegranate apart gently. The pomegranate membrane sections will fan out and, as it fans and opens, the seeds will pop out. Some of the seeds may need a little assistance with a spoon to come out.

4. Try a little variation on Step 3 by putting the sections in a bowl of water before you fan them out. It is easy to roll out the juice sacs or arils by just using your fingers. Discard everything else, strain out the water and enjoy eating the arils whole and the seeds.
