Festival Theme Ideas

Many groups commemorate the holidays with a community festival.

Festivals can be fun events that bring groups of people or communities together. Most festivals are designed to earn money, educate the public, bring awareness to a particular cause or simply add quality of life to a neighborhood or community. If you are planning an upcoming festival in your area, there are many different types of festival themes and ideas to choose from.

Seasonal Themes

Seasonal festivals occur on an annual basis and may be associated with the agricultural seasons. Some examples of these types of festival themes include wine festivals that take place at the height of the wine-making season or harvest festivals that offer fresh vegetables and pumpkin patches. Many groups celebrate the beginning of spring with a May Day festival. Other types of seasonal festivals include popular hot air balloon festivals in autumn, according to Frommer's.

Art and Music Themes

If your group wants to promote local artists and musicians, you may choose from among several types of festival themes. Consider planning a week- or weekend-long event that features a line up of local bands and dancers. These types of festivals may have an admission charge to help pay for the costs of audiovisual equipment or even pay a headliner band. Other types of art festivals include those with crafts booths, such as handmade quilts, wooden furniture and stained glass products. Some communities promote local painters and sculptors with a festival. This type of event may allow artists to sell their work, as well as feature classes or lessons.

Cultural Themes

Cultural festivals may feature different types of artwork, food and traditions from around the world. An example of this type of festival theme is Oktoberfest, which celebrates beer, bratwurst and the chicken dance. Many popular food and wine festivals fall into this category as well. Other types of cultural festivals educate participants about different countries, regions or religions.

Holiday Themes

Holiday festivals can be organized year-round and are a popular way to bring groups and communities together during specific times of the year. For example, Halloween festivals often invite participants to dress up in costumes and trick or treat. Many of these types of festivals feature some type of haunted house and Halloween-themed activities, such as bobbing for apples. Christmas festivals often employ a Santa Claus and use the event to gain gift and monetary donations for underprivileged children and their families. Fourth of July festivals typically feature a fireworks show, patriotic music and traditional summertime American food, such as corn on the cob and hot dogs.
