Freshen Salad From Wilting In The Fridge

Freshen up your salad with a burst of cold water.

Nothing will ruin your sandwich quicker than a piece of flimsy, wilted lettuce. Use a few special techniques to freshen up your salad greens and prevent them from wilting in the fridge. The Food Network's Alton Brown recommends wrapping your salad leaves in a slightly moist paper towel to keep them fresh and crispy. The paper towel will help to absorb any excess moisture from your salad leaves and keep them preserved throughout the storage process.

Instructions

1. Lower your head of lettuce onto a level cutting board. Remove the core of the lettuce with a serrated knife to prevent plant cell damage. Wash the lettuce leaves thoroughly under cold water for a few minutes.

2. Place the lettuce leaves into a strainer. Shake the strainer from side to side to displace any excess moisture. Dump the lettuce leaves back onto the cutting board.

3. Pat down the lettuce leaves with a dry paper towel. Dampen a few paper towels and place them onto the cutting board. Wrap the dried lettuce leaves in the slightly dampened paper towels.

4. Place the wrapped lettuce leaves in a perforated plastic bag to ensure optimal airflow. Lower the plastic bag into the produce drawer of your refrigerator. Adjust the humidity setting as low as possible to prevent the leaves from sweating.
