Make Powder Cartridges

You can save money by reloading your own black powder cartridges.

Using a black powder gun is a way to keep an older tradition of firearms alive. Purchasing black powder cartridges at your local sporting goods store can turn into a costly hobby if you like to shoot frequently. In order to make your black powder hobby more affordable, you can reload your own cartridges at home with a few supplies from your local gun shop.

Instructions

1. Measure the black powder. Set your black powder measure for the amount of powder required for your particular cartridge. This number is located on the box from the manufacturer. For this example we will use 70 grains. Set the measure for 70 grains and pour the powder inside until it's full.

2. Pour the powder into the drop tube. Place the empty, pre-primed cartridge underneath the drop tube. Pour the powder into the tube so that it lands in the cartridge. Black powder must be poured into the cartridge from two feet above the top of the cartridge so that it packs down correctly into the case.

3. Insert the lead bullet into the top of the powder-filled cartridge.

4. Crimp the cartridge around the bullet with a reloading press. Your black powder cartridge is now ready to fire.
