Fresh Fruit Vs Fruit Puree

Fresh Fruit vs. Fruit Puree

Fresh fruit is delicious and full of vitamins and anti-oxidants. But what happens when your favorite fruit is out of season? Just buy some pureed fruit to use in many recipes.

What is Fruit Puree

Fruit is ground or blended to make a fruit puree. Sugar often is added to act as a preservative. Some more fragile fruits like bananas and peaches also require citric acid as a preservative.

Function

You can use fruit purees to make ice creams and sorbets, smoothies, jellies and even baby foods.

Fresh Fruit Benefits

The Centers for Disease Control recommends eating at least two cups of fruit each day (depending on age, sex, and activity level) to maintain good health. Fruits are high in fiber, vitamins A and C, and folates.

Puree Benefits

Purees can be frozen or pasteurized, so they have a longer shelf life than fresh fruit. It is often easier to find more exotic fruits, such as lychees, blood oranges and pomegranates in puree form than fresh.

Nutrition

Fresh and pureed fruit are nutritionally similar. Pureed fruit has added sugar, though, and the peels are removed, which takes away some fiber.
