What Is A Good Substitute To Cooking With Champagne

White wine is a suitable substitute for champagne when cooking

If you are cooking a recipe that includes Champagne, you may want to substitute it for something cheaper or free of alcohol. All you need to do is substitute with something that will create a similar flavor to the Champagne. Other types of sparkling wines are a great alternative if you are on a budget, and for non-alcoholic options, there are some sparkling beverages that you can use too.

Cava

Cava is a Spanish sparkling wine which is similar tasting to Champagne because of its dry and crisp flavor. Like Champagne, it is also made from chardonnay and pinot noir grapes. It was originally known as Spanish Champagne and can be purchased for less than Champagne, so it is a great option if you are on a budget.

Prosecco

Prosecco, Italy's version of Champagne, is made from the Prosecco grape. It is dry in flavor like Champagne and Cava, and it is very reasonably priced. Although it comes from a different grape variety than Champagne, it shares a similarity in taste.

Sekt

Sekt is a sparkling wine from Germany made from Riesling, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris grapes. It is very reasonably priced. It is sweeter in flavor than Champagne but it can still be used as a substitute if you are trying to spend as little as possible.

Dry White Wine

You could use white wine as an alternative to sparkling wine if the dish you are cooking is not dependent upon the carbonated bubbles that Champagne would provide, says head chef and manager Ted Atler of The River restaurant in London. A dry white wine will still provide the same flavor that a Champagne provides particularly if you choose a Chardonnay or Pinot Noir variety.

Non-alcoholic substitute

If you would prefer not to use alcohol in your cooking then you can substitute Champagne with a sparkling white grape juice or a sparkling apple cider, according to the Fit Day website. Alternatively, Gourmet Sleuth suggests that you use ginger ale or soda water with a Champagne extract to create a flavor similar to Champagne but without the alcohol content.
