Make Baked Cinnamon Applesauce Doughnuts

Making baked cinnamon applesauce doughnuts requires a bit of kitchen time, but the result is worth it. The addition of applesauce ensures that the doughnuts will be moist and delicious, and the sprinkling of cinnamon and sugar tops them off in perfect style.

Instructions

1. Combine the active warm water and active dry yeast in a large mixing bowl, and allow the mixture to stand for about 5 minutes, until the yeast dissolves. Add the flour, applesauce, sugar, nutmeg, cinnamon, eggs and salt, and beat the mixture at low speed until it's just moistened, then beat the mixture at medium speed for an additional 2 minutes.

2. Stir in the flour, adding a little at a time until the mixture forms a soft dough. Flour the working surface lightly and knead the dough until it's smooth and elastic, about 5 minutes. If the dough sticks to your hands, add a little more flour.

3. Oil a large bowl and place the dough in the bowl, turning it to be sure the dough is light.y coated with oil. Put a clean tea towel over the bowl and let it rise in a warm place for about an hour, or until the size doubles. Punch the dough down with your fintgertips and return it to the floured surface.

4. Roll the dough to a thickness of about 1/2 inch, and cut it into doughnut shapes with a floured doughnut cutter.

5. Put the doughnuts on oiled baking sheets and use a pastry brush to brush them with melted butter or margarine. Allow the doughnuts to rise in a warm place for approximately 40 minutes.

6. Bake the doughnuts in a preheated 425 degree F oven until they turn golden, about 8 minutes.

7. Mix the sugar and cinnamon in a large zip-seal bag. Brush the baked doughnuts with melted butter and put them in the zip-seal bag. Seal the top of the bag and shake it to coat the doughnuts.
