Beyond drapery, there are many varieties of window treatments available to bring style and function to your interior windows, including blinds and Roman shades. Choosing the right size and style for curtain panels is a matter of determining the look you want in your room and your window sizes.
Standard Lengths
Drapery panels come in a variety of standard lengths. To hang panels just longer than the length of the average window, the 63-inch size is appropriate. Standard 84-inch long panels will run from the top of the window to the floor in most rooms with 8-foot ceilings. With taller ceilings, or to hang the drapes from the ceiling instead of the top of the window, 95-inch-long panels will work. Those with 9-foot ceilings often opt for the longest standard length, 108-inch curtain panels.
Standard Widths
Most drapery panels are 54 inches wide, though width may vary. For a higher-end look, opt for thicker, fuller panels. Narrower panels are available as well, sometimes as little as 40 inches wide. To determine the best width for your window, determine whether you'll use your drapery panels to cover the window or whether you're using them for looks only. If you plan to draw the drapes for privacy, ensure your drapery panels will cover at least the width of your window.
Standard Hanging Height
Depending on the drapery length you've purchased, you have several options for how high to hang your panels. Many people like to hang them so the bottom of the panel barely grazes the floor. To emphasize the height of your ceilings, or to make them feel higher, hang your panels just below the ceiling. Hanging your panels so they pool slightly on the floor can be an attractive, high-end look as well.
Hanging Width
To trick the eye into thinking your windows are wider than they are, hang your panels wider than the actual window width. If you plan to draw the drapes often and use them for privacy and function, or if you'd prefer to buy a less expensive, smaller curtain rod. you can opt to hang them closer in.
