Wedding invitations can be made in a tri-fold layout.
A tri-fold invitation is a unique format for weddings. Most wedding invitations are printed on cards in a butterfly format, and having a tri-fold invitation will set your event apart. The tri-fold wedding invitation gives you a lot more creativity because you have more columns to present and organize information. It is easy to create a tri-fold wedding invitation on your own through a word processor such as Microsoft Word. With the right paper, you can also print your wedding invitations from your computer and send them to your guests immediately.
Instructions
1. Set the page to a tri-fold layout by clicking File, then Page Setup. Click Margins, and set the top and bottom margins at 1 inch. Set the left and right margins at 0 inches. Under the Paper Size tab, locate Orientation, then click Landscape. Click OK to close the window. You will notice that the document layout on your computer will change from portrait to landscape.
2. Set the typing space to three columns by clicking Format on the menu, then Columns. Locate Presets, then click 3 Columns. Locate Width and Spacing, then set all three columns to a 3.5-inch width, and a .25-inch spacing between columns. Click OK to close the window. You can do this manually, or alternatively, you can download a tri-fold template from Microsoft.com.
3. Design your invitation by adding the wedding information and names of the bride and groom. Keep in mind that you should design your invitation based on the fold of your tri-fold. There are many ways to fold a tri-fold invitation, in a Z-format or in a letter-style format. It's up to you to choose which fold you'll have for your invitation. The first column that people will see may have the words, You are Invited, or it can have the names of the bride and groom. In the next columns, you should write the date, time and venue information of the wedding. Depending on the type of wedding invitation you'd like to have, you may follow a more traditional format, which spells out the formal name of the bride and groom, as well as every detail such as the month, day, year and time.
4. Customize the design further by changing the font and font sizes. Traditional wedding invitation fonts include script fonts such as Script MT or Scriptina. If you have a more casual wedding invitation, you may opt for a casual but elegant font like Georgia or Book Antiqua. Remember that you can use text formatting tools such as bold, underline or italic. You can also play with the positioning of the text elements on your invitation by setting the text alignment to left, right or center, to give emphasis where needed.
5. Select the paper on which you will print your invitation. Wedding invitations are usually printed in heavy card stock paper, usually with a wedding-themed sheen such as pearl or marble. You can buy card stock invitation paper from retailers such as Michael's or Target, but specialty paper manufacturers offer more selections, such as pre-scored paper that allows you to fold your tri-fold invitation easily and neatly.
6. Print your invitation. Set your printer in landscape orientation by clicking File, then Print then selecting Landscape. If your printer has a duplex setting, you don't need to worry about re-feeding the paper to your printer. Otherwise, make sure you are printing on the paper correctly. The front page of the invitation should appear on the upright side of the paper.

To add to the design of your wedding invitation, you may include ribbons in the color of your wedding motif. This will add a touch of elegance and enhance the design of your tri-fold invitation.
