The modeling industry is notoriously tough to enter, especially for teenagers, but it is not impossible. With the right look and attitude--mixed with the right business knowledge--a teenager, with the help of her parents, can enter this exciting world.
Getting an Agent
An agent is the person who will get you working. It is very important that you do your research very well, as there are bad agencies that will charge a fee for joining.
Modeling Schools
There are many modeling schools throughout the states; the two most famous ones are Barbizon and John Casablanca's. You can visit their websites and see when the next available castings are in your area (see Resources below). Modeling schools are a good way to break into the industry and, while they are not mandatory, it is good to learn about the business so that you are well prepared for work.
Castings
All models must attend castings in order to get work. A casting is the same as an audition or interview. It gives clients a chance to meet with you and decide whether they will want to work with you.
Working
Some typical teen modeling jobs will include modeling for local magazines, advertising prom dresses or even doing local runway shows in the mall.
Agency Commission
If you are working with an agency, they will typically take between 10 and 20 percent of your earnings. The exact amount will be stated in your contract. If you are under 18 years old, you must have a parent or guardian look over the papers before you sign anything.
