Replace A Fuel Pump In A Nissan Altima

The fuel pump in a Nissan Altima is electric so you should check the fuses and relays before inspecting the fuel pump itself. If you have fuel in your tank but your vehicle has difficulty getting fuel, you may need to clean your fuel pump or replace it entirely. The Nissan Altima's variety of styles may affect your choice of fuel pump.

Instructions

1. Determine the fuel pump that your Nissan Altima will require. This depends on the make and model and engine size of your vehicle. Models made before 2002 will have a 2.4 L KA24DE engine and models made after 2001 may have a 2.5 L QR25DE or a 3.5 L VQ35DE engine.

2. Relieve the fuel system pressure and disconnect the negative battery cable with a socket wrench.

3. Access the fuel pump by taking out the rear seat and removing the access cover. Unplug the fuel pump's electrical connection and disconnect the fuel lines from the fuel pump. Remove the locking ring or screws with a socket wrench and disconnect the fuel gauge assembly so that you can disconnect the fuel tube from the fuel gauge.

4. Remove the fuel pump by holding the connector for the fuel line in one hand while pressing down on the two locking tabs at the same time. Lift the fuel pump out of the fuel tank. Discard the O-ring.

5. Install the new fuel pump using the items included in the kit, especially the O-ring. If you have a threaded lock ring, torque it to between 22 and 26 ft. lbs. If you have lock ring with six retaining screws, torque them to between 18 and 22 in. lbs.
