Become A Manicurist

A manicurist is a licensed nail technician who cleans, trims, provides nail extensions, polishes or paints finger nails and provides pedicures. Earnings for this career path vary dramatically from state to state, but the average yearly salary is about $20,000. Becoming a manicurist may be a good career path for artistic people who wish to be around people, work with their hands and avoid working at a computer all day.

Instructions

1. Meet the basic requirements. You have to be sixteen years or older and have graduated high school or have your GED to get your nail technician license.

2. Take courses from a licensed cosmetology program. Programs are offered at cosmetology schools, junior colleges, and technical schools. Contact any in your area for more information. The requirements from the school vary state-to-state, but most require classroom time mixed with hands-on time. Common cosmetology courses include salon safety, treatment of nails and nail art.

3. Study hard and practice as much as you can during your courses. In order to be a successful manicurist, you need to know what you're doing so you can offer your clients the best services possible.

4. Consider taking supplemental courses such as hand and food massages so you can offer your clients additional bonuses.

5. Start looking for a job at a salon or a spa. Ask your instructors, friends and family members if they know of any places looking for a manicurist. Check online and in the job ads in the newspaper. Consider putting an ad for yourself in your local paper.

6. Remember this is a career, and with enough time, patience and business acumen you may be able to open your own business.
