Standard Furnace Filter Sizes

Most furnaces use a standard furnace filter unless the furnace specifies differently. Before you purchase a new filter for the furnace, measure your filter so you are sure you have a standard filter. After measuring the filter, you need to know what size the manufacturer considers standard and what types of filters you can choose from to filter the air.

Standard Size

The standard size of a furnace filter is 19 1/2-by-19-1/2-by-3/4 inches. However, the standard size furnace filter varies in size according to your filter measurement and the manufacturer's measurement.

Sizing Your Filter

Filters and manufactures have different measurements for furnace filters. If you measure your standard filter, the measurement will be 19 1/2-by-19 1/2-by-3/4 inches. However, the size that the manufacturer has listed will read 20-by-20-by-1 inches. The manufacture listing is about 1/2 inch larger in depth, length and width. When sizing your filter, always add on 1/2 inch to your measurement to find the correct standard furnace filter.

Types of Filters

Furnace filter types include fiberglass, washable, thin pleated, deep pleated, electrostatic and electronic filters. Furnace filters are rated by the ability to capture small airborne particles as small as 0.3 microns in size. The fiberglass filters are 2-percent effective in capturing small airborne particles. Washable filters are 6-percent, thin pleated filters are 11-percent and deep pleated filters are 25-percent effective in capturing the smallest airborne articles. The electronic filter and the electrostatic filters are 94-percent effective in capturing small particles.

Changing Furnace Filters

Furnace filters need to be changed so the dirt particles captured by the filter don't restrict the airflow. Restricted airflow will cause the furnace to work harder to get air, which makes the furnace less effective for supplying heat to the building. Generally, filters are changed or washed once every three months, but if you have tobacco smoke in the home, pets or dirty duck work, you made need to change the filter once a month to keep the air flowing without any restrictions.
