Questions about Minn Kota Powerdrive V2 50
I'm thinking of purchasing this motor but I have a couple of questions. 1. deploy: does the deploy mechanism just tilt? I was wondering if the motor and shaft slide up and then drop down when you deploy the motor? If not, does the motor and shaft stay extended and it just pivots? The reason for my question is because if it doesn't slide as it deploys it will stick out. Some of the previous versions had that arm than launched by moving forward as it moved down. This was nice in that it pulled the whole thing up onto the bow when not in use. 2. mounting: it appears that it needs to be mounted to the bow with the end sticking over the edge, is that correct? 3. mounting plate: is there any advantage to using the mounting plate other than being able to quick release the motor? 4. size: I am told that a 54 unit can be adjusted shorter about 4-5 in length, is this correct? 5. any reason not to purchase this motor? The v2 deploys the same as the older ones in that from the stowed position it pushed forward a couple inches then pivots. It will hang over the edge a couple inches when mounted. Other than the quick release there isn't any benefit to a bracket. There is a lot of deployed height adjustment, I can't remember the exact amount but it's more than 4-5. They are great motors. I am reading issues such as (1) it takes two hands to pull it back up, in contrast to the other type that pulls up with a handle/rope (2) the drive motors tend to fail (3) the foot pedal tends to fail. One guy even said that he buys one and only keeps it till the waranty expires and then dumps it. When I looked at it I had one concern. The motor slides down into a notch that allows the motor to turn via motor. If something catches the bottom skeg of the motor, it will lift up and out of the notch and will no longer steer until it sets back in the slot. I did go and take a look, Samuari you are correct, it looks almost infinitely adjustable in height. I also see that when you pull it up, there is a catch that holds it up. My bow is kind a small, I'm not sure that I have room for an older type mount. I'm sure that I would have to get my cover altered to use whatever kind I get. I found a nice sale on one... $399 for a Powerdrive V2 50, almost hard to pass up. For that price you could probably run it for a summer and if you don't like it sell it in the fall for the same price. Take a look at this bracket, just the center part is mounted on the boat so it takes up less room. It is also plastic so if your cover rides on it, it won't cut it like the standard aluminum brackets can. Minn Kota Motors Ok I can't get the link to go right but it's the mka-21 quick release bracket. OK, I pulled the trigger.... now I have to figure out mount it. My boat is a deep V which means that my platform is +/- 12 lower than the front. First issue is the bow light may be in the way. Would you mount so that it hangs over the right side or would you mount so that it is closer to the center of the bow? I guess it has to be angled so that when pulled up, it lays across the bow and doesn't stick out to much. I'm thinking about the quick release too, and I guess also I have to buy a 60 amp breaker?? I looked on line and can't find an installation manual anywhere. I thought that I would read up on it before it came in. I ordered the motor from Cabelas and it was in stock and picked up at the store..... in 2 weeks! Not what I would call in stock, I live close to the distribution center too. $399 plus tax and you get a $25 Cabelas gift card, sounded to good to pass up. On some boats you have to be creative in mounting and a detach plate helps in that, don't be afraid of drilling the plate if you can't use the 4 original mounting holes. Another reason I like the plastic plate is the part that stays on the bow is a lot smaller. A 60 amp breaker sounds a little big foe a 50# motor but I can't say I have ever mounted one everything I have done have been 55# and I think we use 40 amp but I can't remember for sure. As far as positioning it will help greatly to have another set of hands. Deploy the unit and keep 1/2 minimum space between the shaft and the rubrail. It doesn't matter what side it deploys from,it's just a personal preference. The Cabelas site recommended 60 amps, I'll look closer. So this thing deploys by just tilting, right? Therefore the position of the shaft is determined by how far the unit hangs over the edge? There is no outward sliding forward in the bracket when it deploys, right? The quick release bracket looks as if it has adjustable positions, does this thing allow me to let it hang over the edge of the bow and for trailering or covering I can retract it? I'm having a hard time explaining this for some reason. To deploy it you will slide the head forward then it will pivot but the pivot point doesn't change. So yes the shaft position is determined by how far it hangs over the bow and that will not change. The detach brackets are not adjustable, the slide in style must be slid all the way in to be locked in position. The drop on style just has the block bolted to the boat and the motor is placed over that and pinned in place.
