Changing Saturn Transmission Fluid

Use a ratchet when changing a Saturn's transmission fluid.

Transmission fluid helps to keep all car parts cool and running smoothly. Over time, the fluid breaks down from heat and becomes useless, which can lead to the failure of transmission components. Transmission fluid should be changed at 30,000 miles for most Saturn models. You can save time, money and a trip to the mechanic by changing the vehicle's fluid yourself using a few basic tools.

Instructions

1. Park the Saturn on a flat work area. Inspect the undercarriage of the car on the driver side to locate the transmission drain plug. Slide a large drain pan under the drain plug to catch the transmission fluid.

2. Loosen the transmission drain plug with a ratchet or wrench. Let the transmission fluid drain completely into the container.

3. Wipe off any residue from the transmission plug and opening with a rag. Replace the drain plug, being careful not to strip the threads while tightening.

4. Open the hood of the Saturn to expose the engine bay. Remove the transmission dipstick, which is yellow in color and located to the right of the oil stick. Insert a funnel with a small snout into the dipstick opening. Add four to six pints of fluid to the transmission through the funnel.

5. Remove the funnel and insert the dipstick. Slide out the dipstick and check the transmission fluid level. Add more fluid if needed to reach the max cold level etched into the dipstick.

6. Start the Saturn engine. Press down on the brake and engage the transmission from P to L and back to the park position again. Apply the emergency brake, leaving the car running. Remove the transmission dipstick and inspect the fluid level. Add fluid through the funnel until it is reaches the maximum level. Replace the dipstick.
