Change The Alternator On A 1997 F150

Change the Alternator on a 1997 F-150

The alternator on your 1997 Ford F-150 pickup truck is mounted on the upper area of the engine which makes it easy to replace without removing any other components. However, Ford recommends disconnecting your battery as a safety measure, which may erase the adaptive strategy from the computer memory. It may take the computer about 10 miles of driving to relearn the best strategy for air/fuel mixture control under the different engine operating conditions. This procedure applies to the 4.2L, 4.6L and 5.4L engine models.

Instructions

Removing the Old Alternator

1. Detach the ground battery cable using a wrench.

2. Rotate the drive belt tensioner pulley counterclockwise to release the belt tension using a breaker bar or wrench, depending on your particular F-150 model. Slip the belt off the alternator pulley.

3. Release the tensioner pulley slowly.

4. Disconnect the wire from the alternator using a wrench.

5. Unplug the electrical connector from the alternator.

6. Unscrew the alternator mounting bolts using a ratchet, ratchet extension and socket.

7. Remove the alternator from the engine compartment.

Installing the New Alternator

8. Position the new alternator in place and start the mounting bolts by hand.

9. Tighten the mounting bolts using the ratchet, ratchet extension and socket.

10. Plug the electrical connector into the alternator.

11. Connect the wire to the alternator using the wrench.

12. Rotate the drive belt tensioner pulley counterclockwise and slip the drive belt over the alternator pulley using the breaker bar or wrench, depending on your particular F-150 model.

13. Release the tensioner pulley and make sure the belt is properly mounted on the alternator pulley and the rest of the accessories.

14. Attach the ground battery cable using the wrench.
