Treat For Dry Rot And Termites

Moisture in wood promotes the growth of fungi, which will result in the crumbling and drying of wood. A variety of fungi are responsible for dry rot. It is a necessity to prevent dry rot because it can affect any wooden item and spread rapidly. Termites are also notorious for causing damage to wood. A distinguishing feature of a termite Infestation is the presence of tunnels and sawdust in the wood. In the beginning stages, you can destroy the pests yourself. Otherwise, you need to utilize professional pest control services.


Instructions


1. Get rid of the moisture. Look for the source that causes dampness around your home. Check for any leaking or faults in plumbing and rectify the problem.


2. Cut away any dry rotted portion of the wood using a saw or wire brush. Include a little of the surrounding normal area to prevent further spread of infection. Burn the wood that has been removed.


3. Apply fungicide on the surface of the wood in the vicinity of the decay. Do two coats evenly.


4. Replace the wood. Use only seasoned and dry wood for replacement. Paint the surfaces of the wood with two coats of fungicide before the procedure. Dip the ends of the wood in the fungicide for additional safety.


5. Remove the plaster near the damaged area and clean the wall with a wire brush. Use a vacuum cleaner to remove the dust. Treat the wall twice with fungicide after cleaning the area. Allow it to dry before redecorating.


6. Look for areas affected by termites. Drill holes into the wood lengthwise over the colonized areas. Leave some space in between.


7. Wear protective masks, gloves and eyeglasses to prevent contact with the poison used in termite treatment.


8. Use the dropper to pour the insecticide into the holes. Do not fill the holes completely.


9. Seal the hole using caulk and sprinkle the pesticide over the exposed surfaces as well.


Tips Warnings


Use fused borate for outdoor applications to control dry rot. Use zinc oxychloride plaster for redecorating. More than one application of pesticide will be needed to control termite infestation.


Take care not to get the pesticide in your eyes or mouth.
