Wash Nike Leather Sneakers

Leather shoes will get dirty every time you wear them outside.

Leather shoes breathe naturally, are flexible and have a long life, which is why brands such as Nike use leather in most of its shoe lines. Nike leather shoes are designed for sports and other exercise, so the shoes will begin to show signs of wear as well as collect dirt and stains. It is possible to wash leather shoes but it must be done correctly, otherwise it could damage or destroy the shoes.

Machine Washing Damage

Leather shoes should never be washed in a washing machine. Even on a gentle cycle, the spinning and intense movement of water can eat away at the leather. Immersing the shoe in water is not recommended as the water can soak through the shoe and damage the leather. Leather needs to dry naturally and, when too much water is inside, the leather may not fully dry, causing the leather to mold. Leather shoes should also never be put in the dryer, as it could crack the leather from the rapid drying. The only time it is acceptable to wash Nike leather shoes in a washing machine is if the label specifically states that you can.

General Care

For longevity, store the Nike leather shoes on a cedar shoetree, which will absorb excess moisture. Let the shoes dry between each wearing, at least eight hours. Keep the shoes away from heat at all times. Do not stretch or bend the shoes in unnatural ways and take care when placing your foot in the shoe -- never force your foot in the shoe. Remove dirt as soon as possible to keep it from seeping into the leather.

Hand Washing

Remove the laces -- wash the laces in the washing machine with other garments or rinse in a small bowl of soapy water and hang to dry. Combine 1/2 tsp. of gentle dish-washing liquid with 1/2 cup water at room temperature. Use a soft bristle brush, or clean toothbrush, to scrub the shoes. Place the brush into the soapy water and rub the shoe in a circular motion. Use a dry soft towel to wipe off the solution on the shoe. Repeat this process until you have used the brush on the entire shoe. Dip a soft towel into water and wipe the surface of the shoe.

Drying/Polishing

Place the clean shoes on a shoetree or stuff with paper towels, which will help keep the shape while the shoes are drying and absorb excess moisture. Keep in a dry and well-ventilated room or outside but away from direct sunlight or rain. Use a commercial leather shoe polish to shine and protect the leather, if desired. Read directions on the product and use accordingly.
