Replace The Belt On A Kenmore 70 Series

Occasionally, the belt on the Kenmore 70 dryer will begin to wear out or break because it is constantly moving and subject to extreme heat inside the dryer cabinet. When the belt breaks, it requires replacement, which is simple to do yourself.

Instructions

1. Unplug the dryer. Open the lint filter cover on top of the dryer. Take the lint filter out and unfasten the screws underneath the cover with a screwdriver.

2. Slide a putty knife under the front of the dryer between the top lid and the cabinet on both ends. Lift up with the knife and detach the top from the plastic clips holding it in place.

3. Flip the top lid back so it is resting against the wall on the rear hinges. Locate the front panel screws on the inside of the cabinet near the top.

4. Slide the putty knife between the lower front panel and the dryer cabinet on both sides. Pull it away from the cabinet and detach it from the plastic clips. Set the panel out of the way.

5. Unfasten the upper front panel screws with a screwdriver and lift the panel off the metal clips at the bottom of the dryer cabinet, tilting it away from the cabinet.

6. Unplug the door switch connector on the back of the front panel by hand, setting the panel out of the way and place a couple of wood blocks under the front of the dryer drum to stabilize it while replacing the belt.

7. Locate the idler arm at the base of the dryer cabinet and move the arm forward to relieve the tension on the belt, taking the belt off the idler arm and motor pulleys.

8. Lift the front of the dryer drum up off the blocks and slide the belt out, discarding it and slide the new belt around the drum, setting the drum back down and positioning the belt in the V-groove of the drum.

9. Loop the belt over the idler arm pulley and around the motor pulley, moving the idler arm back into position to add tension to the belt.

10. Remove the wood blocks from underneath the drum and attach the lower front panel to the cabinet, pushing in to secure it to the plastic clips.

11. Plug the door switch connector to the back of the upper front panel by hand and slide the panel onto the metal clips on the bottom of the cabinet, securing the top of the panel with screws.

12. Flip the top lid back down onto the dryer cabinet and press down to secure the top to the plastic clips.

13. Fasten the screws to the top of the dryer under the lint screen cover and slide the lint filter back into the lint filter slot.

Tips Warnings

Never attempt to replace the belt while it is still plugged in.
