Correct A Magellan Explorist Xl Base Map Error

Magellan released its eXplorist XL multi-use GPS navigation system in 2006 with, at the time, its largest color display on an outdoor model, at 3.5 inches. It packs 30 MB of data for the storage of detailed topographic maps for hiking--even off the trail--boating and driving. Though it's no longer in Magellan's current lineup, the eXplorist XL should provide you with many more years of accurate directions. If its base map starts to err, or whole maps start to freeze up, just follow a series of troubleshooting steps, and your eXplorist XL should be back on the case.

Instructions

1. Open the door for your SD card on the right side of the eXplorist XL. Some units' base maps are kept on an SD card, and yours may be dirty or not seated properly. Push in on the card and it should pop out.

2. Remove the SD card and remove any residue or dust with a cloth. Insert the card in its slot. Push in until the card is fully seated. Close the door.

3. Power on your eXplorist XL. Connect it to an Internet-ready computer via your USB connector. Turn the computer on too.

4. Navigate to the Magellan support site. Click on Version 2.1--as of November 2010, the most updated software for the eXplorist XL.

5. Click Download, then select Save and save the new software to a convenient location in your computer.

6. Double-click on the icon for the Version 2.1 software once if has completely downloaded, then click on Run. Select a language and continue the prompts until the software is installed on your device. This should correct any problems with your base map.

Tips Warnings

Two other software downloads can eliminate any glitches with your base map, if the previous steps didn't help. If you're running the Windows Vista operating system on your computer, navigate to the first link in the Resources section and click on Windows Vista Driver Update. Repeat steps 5 and 6 to install this update. Also, navigate to the second link in the Resources section to download the latest version of Magellan's Content Manager for your desktop, an application that inform you when any new updates are available for your eXplorist XL and facilitate the download simply by plugging in your device.
