Apply Joint Compound With A Sponge

Add a spongy faux texture to your walls with joint compound.

Joint compound is a plaster-like substance used to seal seams between sheets of drywall. Commonly referred to as mud by contractors and interior decorators, joint compound is available in all-purpose and quick-set formulas. The compound can also be layered over drywall or sheetrock to form decorative faux textures. Appearance of the texture will vary depending on the tools used to apply the compound. Using a sponge for application will create a light, dimpled look that will complement any room.

Instructions

1. Open your container of joint compound and mix with water if necessary. Some compounds arrive ready-blended while others require dilution. Refer to the instructions on your specific container.

2. Mix your compound with a mud masher until it is smooth and free of lumps. A mud masher resembles a potato masher with a long extension handle and can be found at your local hardware or home improvement retailer.

3. Dip a painting sponge into the compound. Wear gloves during this step to avoid caking your hands and arms with the compound.

4. Apply the sponge to the drywall or sheetrock. For a dimpled texturing effect, press the sponge to the wall and then quickly lift it, repeating until the desired area is covered. For a swirling bristled effect, lightly drag the sponge across the wall using a side to side motion.

5. Allow the compound to dry and cure for 24 hours.

6. Smooth away any imperfections using a sheet of drywall sandpaper wrapped over a sanding block.

Tips Warnings

Work in a ventilated space to avoid breathing fumes from the compound.

Store any leftover joint compound in an airtight container.

Keep your work area free of children and pets.
