Remove Rust From A Chain

Motorcycles are fine-tuned machines that only have parts needed to make the ride enjoyable and safe. Maintenance and care are required to keep these important parts and components in the best shape and condition. One place that does commonly demand the attention of a biker is the chain, which can easily accumulate rust and dirt. If this has already happened to you and your chain needs some help, there is an easy and efficient way to get the job done.

Instructions

1. Roll up pieces of newspaper and fit them around the chain of your motorcycle. Use plenty of paper to protect your wheels and other parts while cleaning the chain.

2. Apply a layer of water-repellent lubricant over the chain. Make sure the lubricant soaks into the rust and through the links of the chain.

3. Run the chain-cleaning brush over the wet chain, working it vigorously back and forth. The bristles should be scraping off dirt on each pass it makes over the chain.

4. Rinse the lube and dirt off the chain with water. You may need to apply more lube and brush the chain again to get all the dirt off.

5. Pat the chain dry with a cloth and apply chain lubricant to it to keep it in good order.

Tips Warnings

If your bike allows for it, remove the chain once a year and soak it in turpentine before cleaning it off, to get a deep-down clean.

Do not drive a motorcycle with a chain that is rusted into position, or you may hurt yourself and damage the bike.
