The GTA Audi cheat is a myth, but it endures.
Grand Theft Auto (more often called GTA) is a cultural phenomenon. The game has garnered incredible amounts of press because of its perceived level of violence and adult themes. Its scathing portrayal of pop culture has also added to its rogue appeal. A number of cheats and hacks have added even more controversy to the mix. The Audi cheat is one of the few that is controversial only because of the debate of its existence.
The Claim
Not long after GTA: Vice City hit the shelves, a cheat was posted on GameFaqs that referenced an Audi Cheat. Many people debated the validity of the cheat, primarily because the GTA franchise has not used licensed car brands. However, various screen shots of the vehicle in the game made it hard to discredit. By April of 2010, forum users at Gamespot Forums had nixed the argument through various tests that proved it was a fake claim, even for the latest incarnation of the game.
The Car
Before the validity of the Audi car cheat had been officially resolved, a group of game enthusiasts had figured out insert the models of the Audi into the game through a process called modding. A number of tool kits allow changing game content for many games, and GTA was no exception. It turns out despite the claims that the cheat was fake, there were people who actually could use the Audi in their game. This led to a number of flame wars between various factions who argued about what was actually in the game.
The Controversy
It's apropos that even a small issue could generate such controversy. The Hot Coffee mod had already garnered international press because of its simulated sex act within the GTA franchise, and the violent content had stirred several politicians into action at the possibility of banning the game outright. A war of raging posts between irate gamers might seem tame by comparison. The fact that such wars endured for several years is testament to the fanaticism of the game's users.
The Cheat
While there is no code-based cheat to add an Audi to GTA, the point is moot. If you are willing to spend the time, you can modify your game to include the vehicle, as well as a library of content not included in the original game. The real question is Is it worth my time? For PC users, these mods are simple to install and require little more technical savvy than was required to install the game in the first place. For console users, the effort is considerable, and requires extensive tutorials.
